Finding gastric bypass support groups in your area or on-line is an important tool to use in your recovery from surgery. Many surgeons or hospitals can help connect you to a support group, and some will even require a commitment to attend before agreeing to perform your gastric bypass surgery.

If you live in a smaller metropolitan area, an on-line community may be your best option, but connecting with others who have been through the gastric bypass process is invaluable. On-line or at larger hospitals you can find support groups to help patients through all stages of recovery. There are support groups for obese people to discuss their options of surgical intervention, groups that concentrate on the post-operative diet stages, and groups that work on long-term health and life-style issues. Some support groups also include group exercise classes specifically designed for gastric bypass patients. A commonality of the most successful gastric bypass patients is their post-operative and long-term support. Because most of the work for patients comes in the year following surgery, gastric bypass support groups are an essential part of the recovery process. Being able to talk to others who have the same struggles and can offer real world advice such as what restaurants can accommodate your new diet, or what protein drinks taste best can be the exact information you need, saving you from a lot of frustration and trial and error. Learning how to live a healthy life is not easy, and doing it alone will be even harder. Working with a support group can help to insure your success as you meet others who are experiencing similar struggles. Support groups can also provide levels of accountability to healthy living and exercise. Re-learning how to eat and live is a process most people are unfamiliar with, but finding an understanding community will help you achieve all your weight loss and health goals.
