Gastro bypass surgery is the most effective treatment for the morbidly obese, but this is not a miracle cure. Weight loss surgery is a serious health consideration and a life-altering experience. For the morbidly obese, generally meaning those at least 100 pounds over their healthy weight, the challenge of loosing weight through diet and exercise is overwhelming. Many people who are morbidly obese have struggled with dieting and exercise programs that do not provide results and leave them feeling worse than ever about their bodies. Morbid obesity is very difficult to control without surgical intervention. Because obesity contributes to cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, the health risks of being obese are significant.

For many obese people, the best option for changing their health and life is gastro bypass surgery. This surgical procedure works by reducing the size of the stomach, impacting the amount of food that can be eaten. Additionally, many weight loss surgeries include a change in the use of the small intestine, limiting the absorption of calories from food. These physiological changes result in significant weight loss.

This surgery is not a quick fix for obesity. Many life-style changes must happen for patients to see results and minimize complications. Patients must be committed to bettering their health and following the post-surgical instructions. Patients will learn how to eat anew, as the stomach can handle less than one cup of food per meal. Additionally, to achieve the best results an exercise regimen is required. It takes commitment and hard work to achieve the desired results from weight loss surgery.

There are potential risks involved with this surgery to include death. Because people with morbid obesity are not generally good surgical candidates, they are at more risk to suffer complications than those maintaining a healthy weight. It is important to weigh the risks and benefits carefully.
