The lap band procedure is a type of weight loss surgery that reduces the size of the stomach. This technique in weight loss surgery is the least invasive and does not alter a patient anatomically. As in other weight loss surgical procedures, it is intended for patients who are at least 100 pounds over a healthy weight.

Like all types of weight loss surgery, it is not a quick fix for obesity. Ideal patients are committed to making a life-style change that includes diet and exercise. The banding surgery will tie off a portion of the stomach which will limit the amount of food a person can comfortably eat. The digestive process slows down also, creating the full feeling longer. While patients are eating less, they should not feel deprived of food.

The lap band surgery is often done laparoscopically, thus the “lap”. The band is a silicone gastric band placed around the top upper portion of the stomach. This surgery can be done on an outpatient basis in some cases, or will require a one night hospitalization. Patients can return to work within a week usually and full exercise in one month to six weeks.

The banding surgery is one option in weight loss surgeries. While gastric bypass surgery, such as Roux-en Y has statistically shown quicker weight loss, the long term benefits of lap banding are similar. Patients should consider improving their health as the primary reason for any weight loss surgery, not necessarily how fast they can loose weight. The banding procedure also can be adjusted or removed if necessary.

The banding procedure is a tool for weight loss and not a cure. In order to achieve the desired results a patient must be committed to following the post-surgical plan. Patients will need to re-learn how to eat and actively live their life. Without this commitment the banding surgery will not be successful.
