The mini gastric bypass surgery is a laparoscopic weight loss surgery that creates a small sleeve in the stomach that is connected to the mid section of the small intestine. The surgery works in two ways, by creating the stomach sleeve, less food can be comfortably eaten by the patient, reducing the caloric intake. The attachment of the sleeve to the intestine about six feet from the top, loops around the most absorbent section of the intestine where most calories and nutrients enter the body. By reducing both the absorption and the consumption of calories, obese patients are aided in their weight loss.

Several surgical options exist for the morbidly obese, those 100 pounds or more over their ideal weight. The mini gastric bypass, the lap band and the Roux en Y are a few of the choices. All weight loss surgeries are inherently risky and can have serious complications; however, obesity also has significant health risks. Because obesity contributes to many serious illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer, patients may find the risks of weight loss surgery tolerable. Discussing your options with your health care provider will help you determine if you are a good candidate for weight loss surgery and which procedure is right for you.

The mini gastric bypass surgery is a quick procedure that is complete in less than one hour. Some patients are done on an out-patient basis, while most require only a one-day hospitalization. This surgery is not offered in all states at this time, but California, North Carolina, New Jersey, Nevada, Florida, Missouri and Arkansas all have surgeons and facilities that perform the mini gastric bypass. This procedure is also done in other countries. With the reported success and ease of recovery, more surgeons and facilities across the United States and the world are preparing to offer the mini gastric bypass as a weight loss option.
