Obesity surgery is one of the most effective treatments for those 100 pounds or more overweight. For the morbidly obese, weight loss through diet and exercise alone can be a frustrating and demoralizing process. Surgical intervention can help patients loose weight, change their life-style and obtain good health.

There are several options when it comes to weight loss surgery. Understanding the types of surgeries, how they work and the expected results is one part of the research potential surgical candidates will want to discuss with their doctors. Because of the compromised heath correlated with obesity itself, patients must understand the risks as well as the potential benefits involved in bariatric surgery. While the results can be impressive, weight loss surgery is not an easy solution.

Obesity surgery is only effective if patients have a long-term view of their health and are willing to make the necessary changes in their life-style to maintain the post-surgical diet and instructions. Eating will never be the same again and some patients find this intolerable. Because of the physical changes to the stomach size through surgery, patients can eat less than one cup of food per meal and high fat foods may never be tolerated because of the changes in the digestive process. However, the physical changes lead to the significant weight loss as calories are limited in consumption and absorption. For the most desirable outcomes from surgery, patients must be committed to their health and well-being. Many obese people do not know how to live a healthy lifestyle and their weight problems stem from psychological issues. This change will require sacrifice and the support from friends, family and health care providers.

Because obesity contributes to other health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease patients there is a significant health cost to being over-weight. Many patients have reported that their diabetes, high-blood pressure and other health ailments have been improved or completely cured after obesity surgery.
